Terroir.BKK SONGWAT was in the area of my old haunt that is now transformed from sleepy business only to a hip and happening area a la Tai Ping Shan Street in the old days in HK.

Proud barista with Australian root: The owner names himself Brewboy and sports a heavy Australian accent (You can find this youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDkJyZNFq84  which Brewboy talked to another Australian with pride) so you know where his inspiration and coffee thing are from which kinda put me off a bit vs my experience. However, I need to drink the coffee to be fair.

Great vibe: The shop was pretty much a "zoo" when I visited on Sunday early afternoon with all seats taken and the bar was worked efficiently.  The vibe is great and you notice the 'table that was there but doesn't play the music while music came out from Sonos speaker on top. Typical and great vibe.

Espresso of SO Ethiopia: I opted from most basic, I believe, Ethiopia for espresso.  It came in a 'fancy' unsymmetrical cup with one lip much thicker than the other. Barista kindly suggested me to drink from the thin lip "one dash" side first then proceeded to the other thicker one.

Verdict: not bad at all.  The thin side has grape and stone fruit with thinner body and sort of mouthwatering which fits the coffee description.  The thick side is fleshy/body heavy and somewhat astringent.  Of course, this is Australian/Australian inspired cafe; I senses some teeny tiny dirty back a la Aussie coffee I had in the past which is quite unique and to me a marker of Australian coffee. To me, this is an upper level among BKK cafes so far.  Not bad.

I "bit the bullet" and order drip from an Australian style cafe.  Drip for Australian "just" came to the scene relatively recent as far as 2012, IIRC (At the time batch brew was even very foreign to them I believe) as at the time an owner of cafe from Australia complains to me he didn't know what to give when a customer, particularly from the US, orders regular coffee vs his offering of espresso, capp, americano, latte or whatever that needs pressure to make coffee.

And I thought I could 'destroy' this cafe with drip coffee; however, I can't.  Not bad at all.

The coffee is Thailand Pangkhon from Chiang Rai (most Northern province in Thailand) with 'weird' processing Mosto Cascara CTF.  This to me works against the cafe to begin with, IMHO, vs my prior experience of using processing to cover the blemish of the green of Thai coffee. This time, it's not which is a good thing.

I got hibiscus and some weird tone I can't tell. Considering it's fermented coffee, this is quite drinkable.  Cool down the coffee has some 'paper' tone that I usually associated with not fully developed roast.  Developed doesn't mean dark; to me it means fuller taste but I wonder this is how far Thai coffee can go. At this point Thai coffee shows a significant improving vs what I had almost a decade ago. At least there was no bark/wood in the cup particularly with light roast like this.

For drip, the brew was okay. Not the best out there ( barista Nan at  is now my gold standard for both Thai and HK market for this trip). It is similar to basic tier cafe in HK which to me is an outrageous improvement vs what I had in Bangkok in the past.

Of course, the hand drip was served in its own asymmetrical cup and I prefer to drink from the thin side.

In all this cafe offers a good balance of coffee and vibe in the heart of hips and happening area these days in Bangkok. Just that it is considered a must visit to see how far Thai cafe and Thai coffee have come.
