Snack Jack Restaurant
Snack Jack Restaurant
2016-08-10
Walking round the night market in Hua Hin, joining the atmosphere being a tourist enjoying the street food as much as our stomach can handle. To the section where seafood stalls and restaurants are, you will get to see how competitive the business is over there. After walking and up down the streets, we finally decided to have a seafood feast and went into Snack Jack Restaurant. Restaurant was visibly full, packed with tourists. We went up the 2nd level via the iron spiral stairs and after browsing through the menu, the server recommended the combo item. We all thought it was a steal to enjoy the seafood combo with a choice of steam or fried fish and decided on it. Seafood platter consists of crayfish, crabs, prawns, cockles , calms and mussels. It was quite disappointing that the crayfish was not entirely cook and most of the items were bland and tasteless unless you were to dip them into the sauce given. Perhaps the only thing that is worth eating on the plate were those prawns, at least they were cooked but on a dry side due to the style of preparation. The Snapper fish is much better and worth eating even though the taste was not really good. Herbs and Spices like lemon grass were added in the base of the fish with aluminium foil and wrapped up. I like the fish fresh but the taste again was too bland on the top side of the fish while on the other side, it was all soaked in its gravy. The dish was awful. Felt that it was a disgrace to their national dish. Rice was not fluffy, in fact by just one look, you know the texture, color and consistency would have failed the entire dish on the spot. Taste was right below par.Overall, it was a total disappointment. We felt that it was kind of tourist trap to have dined there. The Seafood Combo sounded a fuss free choice for tourist like me but with crowds and accommodating of the high turn over rates, the food quality was being compromised, needless to say, the service too.…查看更多

Classic Old Style Noodle Soup
ก๋วยเตี๋ยวต้มยำโบราณชากังราว
2016-08-03
http://www.umakemehungry.com/2016/08/classic-old-style-noodle-soup.htmlWhile driving from Hua Hin to Cha-Am, we chanced by this Classic Old Style Noodle Soup by the side of the road. We wasn't sure of what to expect but we had decided to stop by with our car parked by the road side with cars passing by at high speed.I was surprised to see Caucasians around in the Old Style eating place despite thinking that such shop will be mostly for locals. Place was decent and quite down to earth with basic furnishings. To me, the place seemed to be a shelter or perhaps a perfect place for Rest Stop after long hours of driving.Again, we had "Cha Yen" (Thai Milk Tea). Milk Tea was rather sweet but I guess this is how Thai enjoyed their beverage. On a second thought, if the food is spicy, sweet beverage will help to neutralize the spiciness.Back at home, I'm not a fan of fish balls but over here in Thailand, I could not resist these bouncy and springy hand made fish balls. I do love them especially when they were dipped in the Chilli and fish sauce. For noodles, there will be a choice of clear or tomyam soup and special or regular size. Not only that, you can ge tto choose to have yellow or glass noodles. This dish had totally got me! Perhaps, its the simplest yet best of all meal that I had! Hot & Soup Soup was really appetizing and how I wish I can have a bowl of it right in front of me now. The choice of my glass noodles have been massively covered by their use of ingredients. Slices of Char Siew, crunchy chips, beansprouts, minced pork meat and beautiful hard boiled eggs made up this favourite dish of mine. Garnishing like crispy fried pork lards, onion oil and spring onions were used to give the dish a tastier experience. We had the non spicy version as requested and had it done with the usual yellow noodles with chicken. Soup was sweet but I still prefer the Tom Yam Soup as it enlarges my appetite.…查看更多

Baan Khrai Wang
Baan Klaiwang
2016-08-01
http://www.umakemehungry.com/2016/08/baan-khrai-wang.htmlWhen we all know that Hot & Spicy food is always what we will get in Thailand, I had a different perspective when I visited Baan Khrai Wang. Forget about the mainstream dishes you will have in a moment and indulge yourself with light and fluffy pastries as we entered into Baan Khrai Wang.Baan Khrai Wang is a cafe situated by the beach and quite popular among the locals. After entering the gate, it takes a minute to walk pass the garden and into the exact place where you can enjoy your tea. You will meet this this plump pastry chef ushering you the way into the most scenic area of the restaurant.Ta-da, this is the way! You can laid back and relax enjoying the calm sea. What a wonderful view we have got! Sink yourself into the atmosphere and enjoy the sound of nature while the waves were crawling gently to the shore.Just within a day of landing in Thailand, we had an overdosed of "Cha Yen" (Thai Milk Tea). Every beverage we order is just Thai Milk Tea and other. The Lemon Iced Tea of course is not the same as what we had back home, using Thai Tea and the lemon they use as spices, it taste totally different. Our visit to Hua Hin was never sunny. It was drizzling but on a positive note, we were glad that we were not burnt under the scotching hot weather.Tiramisu with flower? I'm totally in love with the ambiance while having tea with the sight of edgeless sea. Espresso taste from the Tiramisu was not too strong and was good for someone who don't really drink coffee like me. Mascopone Cheese was light with Tiramisu texture being spongy. Most of all, the presentation and environment had already bought me over.Another must try will be the fresh coconut cake. Presented with Frangipani flower, Cake's cream was light and fresh, most of all without being cloying. What a heavenly moment having spongy fluffy cake under the coconut tree. Enjoy some coconut flesh too!I'm already missing this place even though I just came back less than a week ago. Seriously I don't mind coming back again if I were in Hua Hin.…查看更多

Ban Khun Mae
Baan Khun Mae
2016-07-30
http://www.umakemehungry.com/2016/07/ban-khun-mae.htmlBan Khun Mae went translated, literally means "Mum's house". I went there a couple of years back and they had left me a good impression of their Thai Food ever since. The environment was good with warm Thai hospitality which you can enjoy authentic Thai Food in the environment.Place is accessible and easy to find as they are located in Siam Square, popular streets among tourists like us.Having visited so many Thai Restaurants during my trip, it was surprising to see Roselle Juice and Lemon Grass drink in the menu. Without second thought, I immediately ordered them.Comes in a set of 5, you can't go wrong with these deep fried Thai Fish Cakes. They were springy and yummy. Dip them into the sweet sauce to enjoy the bites. The boyfriend prefers chicken thigh meat to chicken breast as texture was quite tough. As for me, the style of though chicken satay is totally different from what we had in Singapore. I find it quite healthy without being too oily and there are no pork lards in between the meat stick. Gravy on the other hand was on a sweet side and of course style was different too with hint of coconut cream taste. While I'm craving for "Larb Moo" (Minced Pork Salad), we ordered something not shown on the menu. The size of pineapple rice shocked us totally as we did not expect it to serve in a small pineapple but it was good for us as we were really very full during then. We were very pleased with the pineapple fried rice as compared to the one we had in Thailand in the previous day. Ingredients such as pineapple cubes were sweet. Prawns, cashew nuts, Chinese sausage were part of the dish too.I won't hesitate to recommend Ban Khun Mae to anyone who is travelling to Bangkok.…查看更多

Sabx2 Wanton Mee
Sabx2 Wanton Mee
2016-07-29
http://www.umakemehungry.com/2016/07/sabx2-wanton-mee.htmlWhile we all thought that we have enough of queuing in Singapore but it was not so true that we don't have to queue for food in place like Thailand. Yes! We are talking about the Wanton Mee in Pratunam Bangkok that was talk of the town sometimes back among our Singaporean Friends."NO BRANCH IN SINGAPORE" was plastered everywhere in the shop, including the road banner which I wondered is that really necessary? Not only that, in the dining area, you can see that they even went into the extent of taking out pictures from the Facebook of "SOI 19" and marked a cross on it.Environment was crazily cramp while dining and we were told to sit side by side to each other, worse or similar to what we had experience in Hong Kong "Cha Chang Teng". Service standard was kind of below par with mixing up of orders, basically they were quick in clearing your plates too.Noodles were served shortly after we seated. Bowls were big which make the servings in the bowl looked extremely little but fred not, that means I have more stomach space for street food. Noodles were toss in oil and alot drier if you were to compared to the full of sauce Wanton Mee we had in Singapore. Thai Version is oily and comes with crab meat, however it was tasteless to me. Char Siew was lean accompanied by some blanched vegetables and Wantons are pretty average. While I have totally of no interest in the Wanton Mee after a few mouthful, I diverge my attention to the plate of brasied pork trotters with intestine. The gravy was peppery and on a salty side whereby the braised item were simply soaked in the yummy braised sauce with sides like hard-boiled egg and preserved vegetables. Dont leave this place without having them.Frankly, when I mentioned the stall name to my local friend, they have absolutely no idea about its existence. What the verdict after queuing up about 30 minutes of our travelling time? Well, I would say totally not worth it if you are expecting good Wanton Mee.…查看更多

Thip Samai Pad Thai
Thipsamai Phad Thai (Pratuphee)
2016-07-26
http://www.umakemehungry.com/2016/07/thip-samai-pad-thai.htmlThip Samai Pad Thai is raved as one of the best Pad Thai in Bangkok not only among the Tourists but also the locals. They have been around since 1966 and is always packed with snaky queues without fail.I'm glad that my Thai pal had suggested to bring us here for a dinner during our recent trip to Bangkok. To avoid the crowd, we reached the place rather early at about 5pm plus in the evening for dinner. Luckily the queue was not that long. While waiting for our orders, we enjoyed cups of Icy Coconut Juice while catching up. The Coconut Juice was cooling and refreshing. They were served in cups of melted ice make of coconut juice.Thipsamai pride themselves as the origin of Padthai that uses shrimp oil and various thai herbs to achieve a perfect flavour. Known for its variations of Padthai served in Thip Samai Pad Thai Shop, we ordered its basic version to have a try of how traditional the padthai is. Padthai is regarded as one of the staple dish for Thai, however there were just too much ingredients in the dish that often, the locals would rather choose to buy from outside than to spend long hours of preparation at home just to cook a dish like that.On the first mouthful of the Padthai, I can totally comprehend why people are regarding it as a "Must Visit" place in Thailand. The sweet and aromatic dish was well combined with various seasoning and ample of ingredients, giving a consistent taste. The noodles had a special charcoal charred flavour which I felt is the highlight since most of us cook noodles under the gas stove nowadays. And should you prefer even stronger taste, feel free to help yourself with chili flakes, crushed peanuts, fish sauce and sugar that is available at every table. If you are looking for other food in there, you got to be disappointed as they sell nothing else except Padthai.Superb Padthai is recommended by numerous TV programs like MasterChef, Lonely Planet, BBC, theguardian and even National Geographic. The presentation is totally familiar to us (if you are an asian - it looks like Nasi Pattaya) as the Padthai noodles were nicely wrapped up in a beautiful yellow egg. Unlike the basic padthai, shrimp oil was used over here which gave the noodles a orange coated appearance. Fresh deep sea prawns were used too. Don't miss it while you are in Bangkok! Some thoughts might be running through our minds if that is a tourist trap, my answer will be a straight no as I still find that the pricing reasonable for a plate of noodles like that and worth at least a try. Through the words of the locals, I understand that Thip Samai Pad Thai may be not the best in Bangkok as they find the taste might be a little too bland for some. However, at least in a tourist point of view here, I find the noodles scrumptious.…查看更多

Living Room Bistro & Wine
Living Room Bistro
2016-07-20
http://www.umakemehungry.com/2016/07/living-room-bistro-wine.htmlThis is the first stop to Dessert and I was quite surprised that we are having pastries desserts over tea time in Thailand. It's definitely no longer the Thailand that I used to know. Passing through the garden, you will find Living Room Bistro & Wine which is just located next to the beach / sea.It was a little bit drizzling during that time and we took the outdoor seating under the big beach umbrella to shelter ourselves away from the rain. However, we could not stay any longer not because of the rain but the flies that came disturbing us.We requested for an indoor seat and was ushered into a sheltered area. We felt so exclusive as it gave us a feeling that we were in the private event room while the server switched on the air conditioned unit solely for us.While waiting for the rain to goes off, we got ourselves some beverages and cakes to pass the time. Very Coconut Cake was served on a wooden board topped with coconut flesh on the cake. There were alternate layers between the sponge cake and fresh cream. Light and fluffy, bet you will eat them without any guilt! What a special way to pass a wonderful afternoon in Hua Hin, pushing back all your worries and issues that we had in Singapore. Smoothie was chocolaty and was not dilute, it was thick till the point that I thought having more sips of that will kill my throat. An absolute beverage not to be skipped if you are in the Land of Smiles. Thai Milk Tea smoothie was authentic, on the sweeter side, just like what most Thai preferred. However, if you were to drink the chocolate earlier on, it aids abit in reducing the sugar rush on your tongue.…查看更多

Kyo Roll En
Kyo Roll En (เคียว โรล เอ็น)
2015-03-13
http://www.umakemehungry.com/2015/02/kyo-en-roll.htmlSpecial thanks to my Thai pal,Nan, for making the meet up successful by pulling some of the time out of her busy schedules. After our heavy lunch, we went ahead with what most of us like to have - desserts. I was introduced to Kyo Roll En, a unique Kyoto Lifestyle Cafe over to After You Cafe. Just like the latter, Kyo Roll En was packed with people and was fullhouse.Kyo Roll En presents the lifestyle in Kyoto and their Japanese contemporary dessert. Interior was theme Zen with artificial bamboo forests giving patrons a relaxing and cool environment. They serves over 60 varieties of artistically-plated dessert. Gion Roll was spongy on the outside filled with matcha green tea flavour with luscious fresh cream fillings of mix berries in a light faint pink color. I'm not really a swiss roll lover but I would say this is good!I couldnt take my eyes away from the Valrhona Roll set as it was artistically crafted and served in a stone heavy platter. Presentation was way above my expectations, elegant and beautifully done.It consist of 'Valrhona' Chocolate Roll, 'Nama' Chocolate with fresh fruit platter , 'Kuromitzu' (black honey) sauce and charcoal vanilla soft ice cream. The soft ice cream was Thailand's first and only black ice cream made from rare 'sumi' bamboo charcoal.Presentation of Yubari Melon totally sweep my feet away. It was love at first sight. The cup of dessert was completed with musk melon jelly, fresh milk ice cream, fresh musk melon granita and of course the world's finest melon, Yubari. On top of that colors presentation scored, it was soothing to the eyes.Perfect when translated from french. The multi-tiered Parfait is a modernized Japanese Sundae, served in tall glass with each layer artisanally designed and crafted to offer the ultimate combination of taste. It does really lives up to its name with such a perfect texture!Desserts were delightful and presentation of them were definitely scene stealer. After enjoying such heavenly sessions in Kyo En Roll, I hopethey can set up some branch here in Singapore, if not I will definitely return for their desserts if i get back to Bangkok!…查看更多

Tha Siam Noodle
Tha Siam
2015-03-12
View http://www.umakemehungry.com/2015/03/tha-siam-noodle.html Thanks to my Thai pal who initiated the meetup in Central Plaza Ladprao which gave me a chance to explore one's of Bangkok's largest mall.Of all popular choices like MK, Starbucks, pizzahut, krispy kreme, Secret Garden to Fuji Japanese Restaurant in the mall, we settled down with Thai Food at last.Tha Siam has its business name written in Thai and was rather crowded. Luckily the restaurant is children friendly with adequate walkway for a pram to be pushed to its end.Interior was modern and spacious, well lit.Upon seeing its menu, I was somehow worried as I thought they were all printed in Thai but luckily every dish comes with a some elaboration in English. Having tried boat noodles for breakfast, I thought such spicy noodles falls under same category and were of close taste. Though we had requested to reduce its spice, it was a fair bit of challenge for us. Noodles portion was closer to our heart. Fish-balls, pork and liver were great to go with the thick herb gravy among the noodles. While this bowl of noodles was a level up from the former and more for the adventurous kind with glass tendon included. They were as good and yummy! The Thai called it "Som Tam" and this Green Papaya Salad is rather common in Thailand, one of the dish you have to try if you go there. This spicy salad was made up of shredded unripe green papaya featuring 5 main tastes of its ingredients: sour lime, hot chilli, salt, fish sauce and sweetness enhanced by palm sugar. In this case, Tha Siam Papaya Salad had peanuts enhancing its fragrance and tomatoes added to taste.Chysanthemum was recommended by my pal out of all other drinks. It tasted ordinary filled with sugar syrup and was quite sweet for me but I guess having sweet beverages is part of Thai's culture. Deep fried to golden brown perfection in its pleasing colors combination presentation, these plate of slim chicken wings were addictive, lending a crispy exterior and tenderness in its meat.I will vote the spicy Grilled pork salad as my favourite side dish! Simply love its refreshing taste from its mint leaves to complement the spice from the hot chilli and cut red onions. Grilled meat came in relatively thick slice, tough and had given us the kick in chewing them. Not to mention its glass noodles, they were appetizing too. Seafood like prawns and cuttlefish were fresh to go with shredded egg slices being part of it.I cant help but to fall into addiction on their fish balls. Unlike the balls from Singapore, theirs were of more volume, without being too artificially springy. We have these fishy goodies well placed in this elegant glass boat separated by a divider to store its sweet spicy black sauce. The "boat" contained not just only fish ball but fried anchovies as well as fish cakes. Be warned about the spiciness of the sauce it case it got too hot! Aww! So much of good food in Thailand that I hope I can have a bite of everything. Even till now, while typing all these, it really tempts me to go back. I guess I will be back there again soon!…查看更多
